Dear Beagling Friends,
I have been recovering the last 4 months from 2 surgeries and a few days of not feeling very good due to an infection. I couldn't go anywhere hardly because the Vet thought I should stay home and take care of myself since I might be getting old.
Now that I am feeling better, the wildfires here in Oklahoma are threatening the Burway Farm and we can't go anywhere right now. We are nervous because we have loaded up to evacuate 4 times since Christmas.
So far the fires have been as close as a half of a mile and the brave firemen have stopped the fire or the wind shifted just in time to save us. The Burway Boss says that we can go to Field Trials after we get a good rain.
Latte' (the pip squeek Rat Terrier here at the farm) went to Indiana with Granny for a Christmas visit with our family. I stayed home to help Poppa take care of the kennel Beagles and 8 pain-in-the-whatever, 3 month old Beagle puppies.
While in Indianapolis, Latte' had an experience she will never forget This is how her story goes.
A SQUIRREL TAIL TALE TO TELL
Latte' and her Rat Terriers cousins, Pepe' and Libby were watching Big Tail Squirrel come down out of the tree to play a game of chase. Granny let the Terrier gang out the back door and because it had been snowing, the ground was a little slick .
Squirrel raced out in front of Pepe', lost it's footing just as Pepe' lunged off the deck and landed right on it. Pepe' grabbed Squirrel's tail causing Squirrel to run smack into the wrough iron bird feeder pole. It staggered and Pepe' conked into the pole also which set the feeder with 20 lbs of seed in it to swinging and it fell right on top of Latte's head for she was running so fast behind Pepe' and Big Tail that she slid right on top of the dog/squirrel pile up. Libby being very wise, did not get in on the chase.
Squirrel got loose and raced for the tree with Pepe' right behind it. Latte' was laying on the ground knocked cuckoo for a little bit.
Granny had been standing at the door watching the game and ran out to get Latte' up. Poor little girl (Granny's words) was covered with seed and so was the ground because the feeder had busted on Latte' hard head (ha). Granny said that this all happened in the blink of an eye.
Latte' said I'll never go in that yard again and didn't for 2 days without Granny with her.
As soon as Granny saw Latte' was not hurt badly, she started laughing and thinks the event is a rare moment that will bring a laugh every time she remembers it.
Latte' said Pepe' should have held on to the tail so they could have a Squirrel tail cap.
Granny thinks this is a great story and it may be, but if I had been there I would have never let go of that tail
