Obituary for Mrs. Mary M. Humphrey--July 20, 1931 - June 9, 2014
Mary M. Humphrey of Bear Creek Road, Leicester passed away Monday, June 9, 2014.
Born in McAlister, OK in 1931, she was daughter of the late Attorney Frank D. McSherry and Mary Clinton McSherry, an Oklahoma educator. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank D. McSherry.
She received a BS Degree in Elementary Education from Oklahoma University in 1953 where she was a member of the Alpa Delta Pi sorority and went on to receive a Masters in Elementary Education in 1957.
Mary, along with her husband, Jerry, a retired veterinarian, moved to Asheville in 1957. She was involved in Junior Woman's Club, Abernathy Methodist Church and was a Cub Scout den mother. After her three sons began school, she accepted a teaching position at West Buncombe Elementary and remained until her retirement in 1992. She was a beloved teacher by her second grade students as well as her peers. Mary was an active member of NCAE, the Buncombe County Teacher Center and served on several committees.
Her survivors include her husband, Dr. Jerry A. Humphrey; three sons, Jay of Carrboro, NC, Thomas of Asheville and Frank (Susie) of Fountain Inn, SC; three grandchildren, Zack, Ryan and Jed; two brothers, Jim (Addie) of Houston, TX; Walter of Spartanburg, SC; sister, Ann of St. Louis, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Buncombe County School Foundation.
